Today is another article about
units in Fantasy General (1996) which
is DOS Turn based strategy game. This time i bring along the siege units to
comment, as i promised. You can see the previous one here.
Peasants
Let's start with humble
beginning! Peasants who usually busy with crop and livestock, have to arm with
their pitch fork and enroll to army. You can already guess that Peasant is the
lowest tier in Light Infantry. But that doesn't make him down. Look at his
expression! He's serious to fight evil denizens for his family and his country.
Swordsmen
When i heard Swordsmen, i thought
to be armored footman not 16th century swordfighter like this. Not that i
complaint. It's just little inappropriate with Fantasy General's overall setting. I have to admit that his sword
and mustache make up for any fight, even the fiercest ones. Do they fit to be
called Musketeer? Or perhaps this one.
Riflemen
I have trouble to determine
whether the 16th century bloke with sword or with rifle, who is deserved to be
called "Musketeer". If i ignore the story of "Three
Musketeer", i can say the latter is Musketeer. Anyway, rifleman has the
same taste for fashionable weapon and cloth like swordsmen. The difference is
simple. Riflemen have to trim their facial hair to improve their accuracy. Any
itchiness on mustache or beard can be annoying especially while aiming, you
see.
Hydra
Hydra is multi-headed giant
serpent from Greek Mythology. I have to complain about the inconsistency of its
head number on in-game version and status screen version. In former version, it
has 4 heads. While in latter version, it has 7 heads. I know there's no exact
number about its head. But consistency is important, Fantasy General. Also why
give it wings in in-game version? There's no story that Hydra can be menacing
aerial threat. Get your fact mythology right.
Shadows
Unlike Hydra, Shadows has more
consistency in in-game and status screen. The resemblance is too strong, even. I
suspect the artist who's in charge of it, is most likely lazy. Anyway, shadow
is like your typical evil creature that's almost like ghost but isn't undead.
Also black. We know that shadow doesn't have blood vessels or other complex
component that every normal living creature has. So why Shadow has
"Bloodlust" attribute? Is it really keen on spilling blood of any
creature even though it don't need to drink blood or anything like that? I can
assume so. The sicko.
Air Warriors
Air warrior looks mystical enough
and also awesome, as you expect from 'magic' alignment/category/race. The air warriors are basically
invisible, so why they don't discard their equipment to become totally
invisible and can attack their enemy stealthily without injure themselves? It's
most likely brilliant strategy. You can guess the reason will be their pride as
Heavy Infantry. While my guess: they have to cover their fragile genitalia
and/or they're not strong enough to kill anyone with bare hand.
Lava Warriors
The presence of Lava Warriors
simply warm my heart because i'm Pyro, just like that. They probably can
withstand this snowy terrain without any warming mean because they're the
warming source themselves. If that's the case, i bet every troop want to be
near their hexagon in this cold battlefield. And they do the opposite if the
battle takes place in dessert or any hot region.
Boar Riders
Large boar can be energetic stead
as powerful as horse. You don't believe me? Just look at Boar Rider's status
screen! The stead and the rider is so full of spirit to charge anyone who
oppose them. If you're still in doubt, see Hog Rider in action. He's
certainly vigorous cavalry despite his small stead or minimalist attire.
Steam Gunners
In previous edition, Steam gunner
makes appearance slightly. You may consider it as teaser but actually i forgot
to include this magnificent Archer. Steam gunner consists 2 person that act as
1 unit: the carrier who carries large canister of steam; and the shooter who
shoot the gun. You can imagine that the shooter and the carrier will go
buddy-buddy throughout the battle because they rely among each other to
survive. Such is the wonder of war. c:
Air Slammer
I told you before that i will
talk about Siege Engine unit. I'm man with my word. Here's Air Slammer. Why it
called like that? I don't think it's capable to slam air, hoping to damage it
or anything like that. Also like other Siege Engine, Air Slammer can't hit air
unit. Anyway, i have a gist of how Air Slammer works. It uses hydraulic
pressure to launch that lumber with skull-shape end, which is quite cool.
Screamer
Screamer looks like experimental metal
rocket. It uses fuse for initial take-off. It has simple shape design and such.
But i reckon there's bit complexity on how it attacks. You see those small
tubes. I think it emit sound that can harm anyone near it hence name Screamer.
Shrieking sound sounds less
effective than claw/fang of dragon or club of Ogre Griffin, thus Screamer is in
the lowest-tier of Sky Hunter class.
Mastodon
If Heavy is in Fantasy General setting, he must be the
one who manned Chain Gun. He will claim that his Chain Gun cost 400,000 dollars
gold to fire it for 12 seconds. He name his Chain Gun 'Sasha' and sleeps beside
it. Also he don't allow anyone touch it. You can bet he always prepares hog-meat
Sandvich wherever he goes.
Hope you enjoy this (another) short article.
Bye!
