Thor Ragnarok (Movie)

My favorite character of Marvel comic is Iron Man or The Punisher. Regarding Thor the god of thunder, i'm not fans of him. Maybe because he's based on Nord mythology thus in my opinion he's Marvel's character with rather low creativity value. But maybe i will like him more if i watch Thor Ragnarok (2017). There will spoiler of Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame! But you probably have watched them so the warning is quite moot.

The movie starts with Thor talks to the audience why he's in cage on this fiery-looking cavern which related to search for infinity stone but fail. Well, he's not talk to audience exactly. He talks to skeleton that also trapped within this cage. But nice faux 4th wall breaking trick there.

Soon after that, the cage open from bottom and he drops in front of Surt/Surtr/Surtur the giant with flaming sword from fiery realm of Múspell. He says that if his crown reunited with eternal flame that on Asgard's vault he will grow into size of mountain and he will destroys Asgard. The event of that Asgard's doom called Ragnarok. Isn't Ragnarok is the doom of human's world? Anyway, he also says that Asgard is defenseless as Odin is not there.

Thor frees himself from the chains once he grabs his hammer. Múspell's sons begin to attack him and he bash them left and right. Then he throw his hammer and it flies around him, smashing any unfortunate demons on its way while Thor beats the rest of them who are inside the hammer's flight radius.

Surtur shoots a fire stream but Thor blocks it by spinning his hammer. Then he jumps toward Surtur and proceed to hit the giant without giving him a single chance to retaliate. Demoman_positivevocalization01.wav

After beheading Surtur, Thor take his crown helmet and chains it to his back. Later he asks Heimdall for return teleport but nothing happens. Meanwhile at Heimdall's workplace, Skurge tries to impress 2 ladies with his discovery by utilizing Bifrost. One of his discovery is those M-16s in Texas. I hate to break it to you, dude. But M-16 is outdated. If i'm not mistaken, The most recent American army's standard issue is Colt M4 that is little bit better than M-16. Although M-16 has longer barrel which can boost its effective firing range, M-16 is heavier and longer thus more cumbersome to use than Colt M4.

Thor have to struggle against this dragon/serpent/monster of Múspell. The way he holds the beast's jaw could be reference to Vidar fights Fenrir in original Ragnarok. But instead of rending the jaw, Thor put his hammer into his mouth forcing the beast to hold the weight of the divine hammer within his mouth and making him grounded in process.

When finally Skurge heeds the distress call for teleport, he puts Heimdall sword into the hub and sends Thor back to Asgard. During the transportation, the title appears. The fonts look like made of computer chips and i quite like it.

I forget to tell you that the monster chases Thor as he teleport back to Asgard. But the warp portal close behind him which result in beheading the beast. The ladies scared with this horror sight, run between their tail and leg away from the scene.

Thor soon reports his successful quest to Odin that currently watching theatrical drama based on the previous Thor movie but the play is focused on Loki's heroism. While doing so, he's on his bathrobe and eating grapes. Something is not right beside big Loki statue that Thor find in the open lately and Heimdall said to be fugitive of the throne.

Turns out, that Odin is Loki in disguise. He finally reveal his disguise once threatened by Thor's hammer that will fly pass his face before Thor's hand. Once persuaded by pushing the hammer against his chest, Loki agrees to take him to where Odin is.

Thus Thor and Loki go to human world once again. To everyone surprise, Odin isn't in the place where Loki left him last time. But Thor can have group selfie with his fans. He looks pretty sympathetic there no wonder everyone like him.

Once the fans leave, Loki suddenly falls into some kind of magic hole and leave a address card "177A Bleecker Street". Thor goes to that address and meets...

...Smaug Dr. Stephen Strange! Benedict Cumberbatch here serves Thor with glass of beer (with extra serving) by using magic! He tells Thor that Odin like to remain exile in Norway and there's no way for Strange to contact the thunder god because he has no cell phone. He suggests using email. Strange reply with "Yeah, do you have a computer?" and Thor answer: "No. What for?". If a wizard has better knowledge about modern technology than you then you have serious problem, Thor.  =_=

After some mini teleportation within Strange's home that confuse both Thor and me, Strange create a warp portal that lead to Odin's whereabouts by using a single hair from Thor that he manage to get from behind. Before go through that portal, Thor asks Strange to return Loki and he agrees.

I fell into that strange hole of Ghost Fort map in Team Fortress 2 several times so i know that feeling, Loki. Then Loki is about to attack Strange but he shoots the portal toward Loki and Thor immediately teleporting them to Norway.

Medic_positivevocalization01.wav. That some beautiful landscape you, Norway. Odin tells them that his time is almost up and Hela the goddess of Death that once sealed with his power, will arrive as he passes away.

After Odin's timely demise, Thor wants to unleash his anger to Loki but interrupted by Hela's arrival. Thor can handle this, right?

Scout_jeers04.wav. She shatter the mighty hammer! Sensing that they're in deep trouble. Loki asks for teleportation back to Asgard.

But Hela manages to get in the Bifrost bridge as well! Loki throw knife at her but she catches it and throw it back to him. Loki is out of the bridge. Hela then proceed to beat Thor. Although he fights back as hard as he can, he later thrown out of the bridge too.

This time Volstagg is the one who operates the Bifrost bridge and he's surprised that he brings Hela to Asgard instead. He tries to strike her with all his might but Hela throws her sword out of her hand very quick and it pierces Volstagg's torso, killing him. Fandral also meets same bad fate with him. On the other hand Skurge, surrenders and that makes Hela impressed.

Meanwhile Thor is thrown into a massive junkyard. A group of local tribe approach him and about to make him their diner. Thor instinctively call his hammer but he forgot that his hammer is long gone. He can take on the melee attacker but get trapped by electrified net. God of Thunder is paralyzed by electrocution. Isn't that irony or what?

Another hunter wants to claim Thor. She use her gauntlet to control her ship behind her and blast those group. Later she plant a chip on his neck and electrocute him to unconscious. It's another irony!

Meanwhile, Hela is massacring Asgard soldiers that are led by Hogun. They deploy a battalion of flying warship against her but don't work. One of the soldier manage to stab her in the back but that just another failure attempt to hurt her. Hogun tries to stand up and fight again but get impaled by Hela's sword like Volstagg and Fandral. R.I.P Warriors Three. -_-

Back to Thor. He's in some kind of pocket dimension called Sakaar and He's sold by that huntress to that old man on chair named Grandmaster. Although he speaks in soft tone, he's not good person. I tell you.

Thor is brought to Grandmaster's party hall and meet Loki but he denies his relation with Thor. If you don't know, this moment right here is quite famous meme and i don't want to leave it un-screenshot-ed.

Because Thor is intended to be gladiator, he's brought to this room that loops infinitely. He meet with the stone gentleman Korg and his friend Miek. I like this Korg because it's very rare to see stone person to have gentle voice and manner. He doesn't look bright like other stone humanoid sure but it's amusing to see him with soft tone and like to call stranger with "man" in friendly manner.

In Asgard vault, Hela comments about artifacts inside of it which either fake or weak. One of them is this fake gauntlet of infinity stones that may foreshadow the appearance of Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War.

Then she uses the eternal flame inside the vault to resurrect Fenrir and her dead soldiers. Soldier_negativevocalization01.wav

In the mean time, Thor is in gladiatorial preparation chamber. Korg tells him that the scrapper that brought Thor here, is Asgardian too. He see some special mark that only Valkyries have, on her forearm. He tries to persuade her to help him return to Asgard but she refuses.

Before the first bout as gladiator, Thor is forced to have his hair cut. At first he threatens the barber who's none other than (late) Stan Lee. But after he activate the hair cutter that more resemble 5 blenders in one device, Thor begins to weep and beg to not cut his hair. The impression of his intimidating manner changes to weeping, makes me like him more. I give him that.

Here's his new appearance and i say not bad. I like to have my hair short myself. For some reason he reminds me of Kratos from God of War game. As for his opponent, he's the grandmaster's champion and if Thor can defeat him, he's granted permission to leave this world. The grandmaster's champion is...

...the incredible Hulk! Thor feels relieved with this reunion. Hulk hesitates for awhile but he later proceed to fight Thor.

Thor tries to talk to Hulk but eventually they fight. Hulk slams Thor's body left and right which resemble what happen with Loki in first Avengers movie. Loki is very happy with that while says "That's how it feels!".

Eventually, Thor is cornered and he get vision about Odin. Then suddenly he unleashes lightning bolt at Hulk to the sky thus freeing himself. Later Thor looks dominating in the fight but Grandmaster activates the paralyzing chip thus he loses the fight.

In Asgard, Heimdall stealthily retrieved his sword from his workplace and later rescues refugees from Hela's Draugr(s). After the fight, Heimdall take them to Stronghold made by Asgard's ancestors.

Meanwhile, Thor becomes another grandmaster's champion thus he's in the same luxury room as Hulk. For now, Hulk is cool with Thor. He asks how Hulk gets here and he answer it "by Quinjet" then he points it on junkyard. Hulk is butt-naked because he's from taking a bath nearby. Thor is uncomfortable to see Hulk's genitalia and i censor his butt for everyone's sake.

In this room, there's no door but alarm activated as Thor passes through that corridor and later get paralyzed again. So he can't go to Quinjet that easy. It seems Hulk can pass through it trivially when he goes to training. That's most likely because he voluntarily stays at Sakaar and he thinks Earth doesn't welcome him anymore. Plus, he's close friend with the Valkyrie. While Hulk goes to training, Thor have some clairvoyance via Heimdall to know how Asgard's doing and it's not pretty.

On that night, Thor have some friendly chat with Hulk and later ask him a favor. On next day, The Valkyrie pay Hulk a friendly visit. Thor wants to talk with her and she immediately leave. But Hulk persuade her to stay (by throwing a decoration at the exit). Thor plans to go back to Asgard and form a team to defeat Hela but Hulk and The Valkyrie refuse that idea. However, Thor manages to steal the controller for the chip on his neck from her stealthily.

Next, he jump through the window from that room and hastily walk into Quinjet and thankfully it stills working. The Quinjet needs password to activate. He says his name in any way possible but fail. He also say "The strongest avenger" twice but also fail. Then he curses at Tony Stark then thinks for a while and insert "Point break" and succeed.

The event of 2nd Avengers is that long time ago, huh? I didn't know that. Anyway, Hulk burst into Quinjet to ask him to stay. Thor wildly press buttons to make Quinjet takes off but incidentally bring communication log from Natasha Romanoff (A.K.A Black Widow) instead. After watching it, Hulk goes wild a bit and turns into Bruce Banner.

Grandmaster is irritated with the fact that Hulk is missing along with Thor so he sends Loki and The Valkyrie to bring him back. They have little dispute and fight. Eventually Loki get his hand on her head and bring her back the memory about that fateful moment that...

...A squadron of Valkyrie fight against Hela. Hela takes huge initiative by throwing hundreds of sword from her hand. If only those Valkyries have some kind of anti-projectile method, the outcome of the battle could be different. Those Valkyries who still survive after the bombardment, try to fight Hela on foot but fail. The Valkyrie survives this onslaught thanks to her comrade who covers her from Hela's sword. After the flashback, the Valkyrie defeat Loki swiftly.

Thanks to that, The Valkyrie is motivated to take on Hella once more. She find Thor and Bruce on the street and take them to her apartment later they discuss how to get out of Sakaar. As Heimdall's advice, they have to go through the biggest wormhole which called -excuse me- Devil's Anus. The problem is there's lots of problematic turbulence there and Quinjet is broken. Loki who's captured by the Valkyrie, says that he have stolen access code to Grandmaster's security system which allow them to steal ship from Grandmaster without setting alarm. They have no choice but to heed his suggestion.

For their plan to go smoothly, they need distraction. Therefore they free the gladiators. Korg get the revolution like he wants. Cm_sniper_summary_callout_01.wav

Engineer_autodejected02.wav. I never thought to see Thor, The Thunder God firing a laser rifle but here it is. Along with Loki, he shoot Grandmaster's Lackeys who happen to guard this spaceship hangar. Sucks to be them.

Eventually, they reach the place where they keep the spaceship. Loki make a trick to set off alarm but Thor predicted that. He sneaked the paralyzing chip on Loki's back and activate it, leaving him twitching on the floor haplessly.

Thor get his hands on Grandmaster's private spaceship but unfortunately it doesn't have any armament on it. The Valkyrie launch Bruce using seat ejector, into the stolen spaceship. The Grandmaster obviously don't like this thus he send his men to pursuit Thor. He have to give a hand to The Valkyrie that is currently fighting the pursuers so he gives the steering wheel to Bruce and hope he can figure it out by himself as he has 7 PhD or whatnot .

Lucky for Loki, Korg turn off his paralyzing chip. Moreover, Korg offers Loki to escape together with his band and Loki gladly accepts it.

The plan is: Heimdall escorts the refugees to Bifrost Bridge to escape, The Valkyrie and Bruce will assist Heimdall doing so, while Thor distracts Hela to come to Asgard palace. Awaiting in Bifrost Bridge is Draugr(s) and Fenrir. On the other side, another group of Draugr led by Skurge is ready to attack. The refugees are trapped but The Valkyrie and Bruce arrive just in time. She bombards Fenrir with the newly installed gun on spaceship.

Thor doesn't do well fighting Hela. He doesn't put much of fight and he lose his 1 eye by Hela's blade strike. But don't worry he will get replacement eye from Rocket Raccoon much much later. The good guys are in pinch. Is this the end?

Of course not. Loki and the gladiators come to the rescue! The refugees can get into the spaceship while Loki and his friends will deal with Draugr(s).

Meanwhile, Thor has another vision about meeting Odin. He cries that he can't defeat Hela without his hammer. Odin replies that the hammer isn't source of Thor's power. Then Thor cries that Hela has taken Asgard but Odin argue that Asgard is never been a place and it's where their people stand therefore Asgard's people is the utmost importance. On future, the part of Norway where Odin last standing become Asgard because it will be inhabited by those refugees or maybe half of them if i remember correctly from watching Endgame that is.

A big lightning strikes Hela thus Thor breaks free from her clutch. Then he proceed to electrocute any Draugr(s) that dare to defy him.

It seems the gun doesn't work on Fenrir thus Bruce takes initiative to become Hulk again even though he said that he may not become Bruce again if he transform into the green giant. I love what i see here: Hulk is doing suplex on Fenrir in the middle of Asgard ocean. It's both beautiful and amazing. Spy_positivevocalization04.wav

Hulk manages to throw Fenrir away to the end of Asgard. I forget to mention that Asgard is flat world therefore Fenrir is lost in vast space so he's practically dead. Skurge able to blend among the refugees in the spaceship to save himself. A gigantic spike burst from ocean and stabs the spaceship preventing it to fly higher. Draugr(s) invade it via the gigantic spike. Then Skurge decides to fight them (and destroying the spike in process) by using the 2 M-16s. This screenshot reminds me of Doom's art cover so much. But later he meet the same fate with the Warriors Three. Soldier_HatOverHeartTaunt05.wav.

Here's another moment in the movie that later become meme. Thor knows he can't defeat Hela so he told Loki to resurrect Surtur by placing his crown to eternal flame while Thor and The Valkyrie distract Hela. Surtur now becomes the size of big mountain lay waste on Asgrad city. Hulk smash Surtur's head once and get swift swat from the flame giant. Thor tells Hulk to leave Surtur alone despite his simple argument. Hulk obeys Thor with some grumble, grab Thor and The Valkyrie, and jump up to the large ship.

Hela tries to stop Surtur by throwing large javelins at him but fails. Surtur plunges his giant sword through Hela thus "Ragnarok" happens.

Demoman_specialcompleted11.wav. That's the end of Hela and not Asgard though. Odin said that Asgard is where their people stand, remember? As for Surtur, maybe he's also dead so "he dies as he lives" as they said, right?

I'm glad, Korg is there. Anyway Thor becomes King of Asgard and when Heimdall asks him where they go, he says to Earth. The End.

On the blooper, their ship is about to be invaded by Thanos' ship. Engineer_negativevocalization06.wav

And Loki will get killed...for real this time.

I think this is the better looking one than the title because this one is more colorful.

Thor Ragnarok (2017) is superhero movie with humor and more approachable logic into the mix like what you expect from MCU's movie. They should name the movie "Thor's Ragnarok" with pronomina because it's Thor who causes the Ragnarok. I mean, sure. It was Loki who done it but Thor's the mastermind who causes it. First, i like to compare the "Ragnarok" with the original ones to my best knowledge. I refer the original event as Ragnarök because that how it's written or at least in Wikipedia. As mentioned before Ragnarök is massive event that cause the destruction of human world but in Ragnarok is the destruction of Asgard. Ragnarök involve all-out war between Nord gods, Valkyries and their Einherjar versus Surtr along with Múspell's sons, Fenrir, and Jormugandr. While Ragnarok only tone down to Surtr destroying Asgard. In Ragnarök, Thor is killed by Jormugandr the giant sea serpent. In Ragnarok, Thor plans to destroy his own homeworld that has been taken by Hela the goddess of death also kill herself with the help of Surtr.

It may sounds underwhelming that the solution to Hela's crisis is to "utilize" Surtr but it's functional and i can't complain about that. I think the story proportion is bit off. It consist mostly Thor's struggle in Sakaar and the Ragnarok's part is smaller if compared to that. There's 3 occasion where Led Zeppelin's Immigrant Song played, maybe it's intended to foreshadow that the Asgard people will immigrate to earth. If i'm not mistaken the original Marvel's Thor is Techno-clumsy. Chris Hemsworth's Thor is also Techno-clumsy but less serious or -i can say- more humorous. Here's some example to proof that: the aforementioned moment when his hair about to get cut, and he likes Hulk more than Bruce when talking to Hulk and vice versa. Overall, he's likeable to me although Korg is still my favorite  and this movie is worthy to watch at least once.
